Castleton - Samuel Anthony “Red” Gamello, Sr. , 102, of Castleton, New York, passed away on 04/20/2024 peacefully in Barnwell Nursing home, in Valatie, New York.

Sam was born in Newton Hook, NY to parents Gaetano and Rose Gamello (Greco) on November 28, 1921.

Sam attended grade school in Kinderhook, New York, before beginning work at an early age. However, it was his profession as a barber that brought him the most pride. For over 50 years, Sam dedicated himself to his craft, cutting hair and connecting with his community in Albany.

During World War II, Sam bravely served his country as a member of the US Navy. His service was a source of pride throughout his life.

In 1999, Sam was honored by the local American Legion Post number 47 for his unwavering dedication as a member for over 75 years.

Sam is survived by his children Tom, Timmy, and Debbie (Donald), sister and very special caregiver Rosie, brother Guy, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded by his wife Mary, son Sam (Joanne), his parents, and siblings Lena, Joe, Frank, Ralph, Charlie, Jimmy, Susie, and Lucy.

The wake will be held at Bond Funeral Home in Valatie, NY, on Thursday April 25, 2024 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. A prayer service will follow at 5:30p.m.

A private graveside service with military honors will be Friday, April 26, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the New Sacred Heart Cemetery on South Old Post Road, in Castleton, NY.
